BIOGRAPHY

RYAN BROWN’s works have been called “modern composed music at its best: nimble, expressive, ear-turning, and strange in an accessible way, highly virtuosic but never pretentious” (Washington City Paper).

Performers of his work have included the JACK Quartet, pianist Lisa Moore, Newspeak, Janus, Redshift, California E.A.R. Unit, the Paul Dresher Ensemble, and the Brooklyn Philharmonic, among many others. His music has been presented around the world in festivals and series such as MATA Festival, Carlsbad Festival, Bang on a Can Summer Festival, Keys to the Future, BluePrint Project, and Gaudeamus Festival (Amsterdam).

Ryan has received awards from the Gerbode and Hewlett Foundations, ASCAP, Meet the Composer, American Composers Forum, and was a finalist for the Gaudeamus Prize in Amsterdam. Recordings of his music can be found on the trAce and New Amsterdam record labels.

In 2006 he co-founded San Francisco’s annual Switchboard Music Festival, an 8-hour music marathon bringing together composers and performers who are challenging traditional genre lines. Himself active as both an electric guitarist and electric bassist, Ryan has been a featured performer in works by Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and John Adams, as well as the premiere performance and recording of Steve Mackey’s Measures of Turbulence.

Ryan is a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and California State University, Long Beach, and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. at Princeton University. His teachers have included Dan Becker, Robin Cox, Martin Herman, Paul Lansky, Steve Mackey, Bruce Miller, Dan Trueman, Dmitri Tymoczko, and Barbara White.
